An Introduction to the Friends of Abbots Green

The Friends of Abbots Green, known affectionately as FOAG, are a group of parents/carers who voluntarily offer their time and effort to raise funds for the school.  This funding is used to purchase additional resources, equipment and to provide memorable opportunities to enrich the learning and enjoyment of children attending Abbots Green. The Friends work hard to ensure that their fundraising events are fun for the children and their families to be involved in and include such events as Dress Down Days, Christmas and Summer events, School Disco's and Easter Fun.

The Friends meet around once a month at the school at 7.00pm on a weekday evening. A meeting usually lasts for up to 2 hours during which time they plan fundraising events. Although the FOAG is an informal group they are a registered charity and have a Chair, a Treasurer and a Secretary in addition to other members. There is normally also a representative from the school staff present at the meetings to work with the Friends.

Friends recognise that people have differing family and work commitments and so everyone does as much, or as little, as they are comfortable with - every contribution is valued and appreciated! FOAG Coffee Morning - Friday 17th September 2021

To kickstart the year we would like to welcome new and existing parents to join us for our very first FOAG Coffee Morning.

We hope this will be a great way to meet other parents, find out more about what the Friends of Abbots Green do, and lend your support as we make plans to raise funds for our children and the school.

At the AGM held on Thursday 19th September, the following Committee members were appointed for this academic year:

Chair - Ian Goodchild

“My children are in Year 2 and Reception. Having volunteered with events for a couple of years, I’ve seen the impact that FOAG has on our children’s school experience (they love a disco!) and I’m aware of the benefits to the school of the additional funds raised by FOAG. Whilst I’ve taken on the role of Chair, it’s all about the collective efforts of all of us and I’d welcome any ideas, time or feedback to”.

Secretary - Lisa Tatham

“I have a daughter in Year 3 and over the past couple of years have had the chance to be part of the FOAG committee. It’s been a great opportunity to help raise funds and give something back to the school, there is going to be lots planned for the next year and we can’t wait for you all to be involved.”

Treasurer - Rachel Tasker

“I have a son in year 6, a daughter in year 3 and an older son who has now left the school. I have been involved in FOAG for the last 4 years but only been treasurer for the last 2. I have really enjoyed helping to arrange exciting events for the children and raising money for the school and really looking forward to the year ahead.”

As a committee, we’re excited about the events planned for the year ahead (see below) but they (and we) will only be successful if we have the support and assistance of parents and grandparents. We encourage you to join the FOAG Facebook group which we use as our primary method of communication and organising events.

The school have expressed a desire to redesign the Street (and library) during this academic year. It should be the hub of the school encouraging reading, interaction and community. To quote Mrs Morrison “It is not and should not appear to simply be a corridor but instead a hook for inspiring children from 2-11 to develop a love of reading”. As a committee, we have agreed to fund this work but need to raise more money to deliver the full vision for this key area of the school. We look forward to sharing progress with this soon..

• Movie Nights for Year 1 to Year 6

• Gin Tasting Session

• Brewers Briefing (and sampling!)

• Quiz Night

• Table Top Sale - May

• School Lottery - more details to follow

• Non-Uniform Days

• Circus - June/July

• Year 6 Leavers Party - July

These events can only be successful with support. Any time you can give would be gratefully received by us… and the children!
